Fuel information captured verbatim from Volkswagen's booth at the SEMA Show.

Gasoline... the Fuel of the Past
Gasoline has powered the majority of the world's cars and trucks for the past century. Cheap, available and reliable - for years few people questioned its utility. With increased attention to the environmental impact of automotive emissions, including global warming, it has become obvious that gasoline can not be the fuel of the future. Volkswagen is investigating the use of numerous alternative fuels.

Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel
Diesel engines have always been more efficient than gasoline engines - as much as 30% - because less heat is lost in the combustion process. Enter Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel. A Special refining process known as hydrating removes most of the sulfur before the fuel gets to the pump. Instead of 3000 or more PPM, it's about 500 PPM.
Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel
If Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel is better than regular diesel fuel, Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel raises the bar even further, with content about 15 PPM. The U.S. EPA has mandated that by 2010, 100 percent of all on-road diesel vehicles must run on Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel.

Biodiesel Fuel
Biodiesel Fuel comes from agricultural products such as soybean oil, canola oil, recycled cooking oils or even animal fats - a renewable energy source. Pure Biodiesel (B100) can fuel engines, or can be blended with conventional diesel fuel. Biodiesel Fuel provides similar horsepower and torque as regular diesel.

SunFuel
The problem with many alternative fuels is that the energy they create is actually less than what it takes to produce them. SunFuel uses the primary energy source on earth - the sun. At Volkswagen, our synthesis factory turns bioplant mass from wood, wheat or plant waste, into gas, and then a special liquid fuel that can power a vehicle or be blended with other fuels. As the SunFuel is burned in the automotive combustion process, CO2 is produced. Plants growing in the field reabsorb the same amount of CO2. SunFuel is powering Volkswagen vehicles today!
